There is a non contact advisory for Whitesburg Ky water. Citizens are advised to not use their water for anything except toilet bowl use.

No Showers

Do not wash your hands in it

Do not wash dishes in it

and Especially do not drink the water!

Unofficial reports on the situation are that there has been a diesel spill that has contaminated the water sources. If that is the case then it would be the third diesel spill in the region within the last 3 years. The first two diesel spills occurred as a result of neglect on the part of Childer’s Oil. In November of 2008 there was the initial spill that was a result of poorly maintained and leaky diesel storage tanks. The Lexington Herald Leader Reported, “The spill, followed four months later by a similar spill from a second Childers Oil site, damaged the Whitesburg water plant, shutting off service for days to 7,500 customers, including clinics, schools and a hospital. No injuries were reported, but dozens of people, businesses and the city sued the company for damages after dealing with oily water coming out of taps for days at a time.”
