Project Progress from August 2010 through December 2010

Headwaters Inc has been gaining a great deal of momentum within the past few months, including increased river clean ups, the additional receiving of grants, the beginning stages of organizational planning, and the incorporation of further educational initiatives into our mission. We are all very excited to work with Headwaters Inc as it continues to progress into the new year and we hope that you will join us in our mission.
The month of August brought a great deal of growth to the organization through increased planning and restructuring. Headwaters Inc began to address the need to more clearly define its goals and where it wants to be within the next two to three years. We hope, as an organization, to grow in the coming months and years so that we can better serve our community, through education, a strong network of water testers and the assertion of greater change to the water quality standards of the region.
September too brought increased growth to Headwaters Inc. as many of our board members and community volunteers attended the Brushy Fork Institute at Berea College, see; http://www.berea.edu/brushyforkinstitute/ and http://www.berea.edu/. We learned a great deal about small community organization and action, as well as having the privilege to meet and work with many talented organizations in our area. The attendance to the Brushy Fork Institute was also the first step to realizing our Spring 2011 Jenkins River Clean Up Project, which is being funded by Brushy Fork. This new project will not only fund a project aimed at cleaning up the water at the base of the Jenkins school system, but will also allow us to train many new water testers in the region, as well as providing us the funding to move forward with the strategic planning efforts that Headwaters will need to grow. Headwaters Inc. also attended the Kentucky Association of Environmental Educators which allowed us to garner the support and input of many other environmental educators within the state of Kentucky! We also had the privilege of participating in Whitesburg Days with the Mountain Heritage Festival where we were able to talk to many of the citizens of Letcher county! We cannot wait until next year when we will be able to participate again!!!
The month of October was when we began our citizens voice campaign called, “What is your water Story?” This campaign will be ongoing and will allow local citizens to speak out on the water quality issues that they have faced will living in the region. The videos will be featured on many of the Headwaters sites including kyheadwaters.org, facebook.com, twitter.com, and on this blogspot! Contributors already include, Brett Ratliff, Kay Fisher, Regina Donour, Robert Salyer and many more, with video and production assistance from Dylan Fisher, Matthew Hopkins and Courtney Young! We also began working much closer with other local media outlets so that the Headwaters Inc. project schedule and mission could reach an even wider range of people! Headwaters Inc. also got further training from the Appalachian Coal Country Team so that we may continue to increase our capacity in the region! Toward the end of the month, Headwaters Ins participated in the Whitesburg artwalk, where Sam Adams and Jennifer Honeycutt both displayed their photographs of the Letcher County region for all to enjoy!
As the seasons continued to change in the month of November, Headwaters Inc began their river clean up cycle and in addition assisted the Pathfinders of Perry County in their first monthly river clean up in Hazard Ky. We also began planning for the Campbell’s Branch Community Center Clean up in December. We also continued to strengthen our ties with the Pine Mountain Trail Conference, with whom we will work with, in addition to the Letcher County Tourism Commission, on the upcoming connector trail between the Pine Mountain trail and downtown Whitesburg!
December was a month of growth and rest for Headwaters Inc. Before the holidays rolled around Headwaters Inc. attended the River Network Training in Waynesboro PA, where we were able to gain a great deal of training on dealing with issues of burnout and strategic development. We also were granted funds by the Brushy Fork Institute to continue forward with our Jenkins River Clean up and Strategic Development Project. Headwaters Inc. also conducted a river clean up at the Campbell’s Branch Community Center, which gained us many new volunteers to the organization! Despite bad weather towards the end of the month Headwaters Inc had an amazing end of the year and is looking forward to the upcoming 2011 year!!!
