On March 30th, 2013, 30 student volunteers from Letcher County Central High School participated in reforesting a pre-regulatory strip job at Fishtrap Lake, Pike County. Among the other participants were students from Oberlin College, AmeriCorps VISTA members, and a full AmeriCorps NCCC team (Delta 3, Class 19). Great job, guys!
This event received funding assistance by the Appalachian Coal Country Team through the Harris and Frances Block Foundation.
This is good stuff! Great job to all those who participated. Why were there no volunteers or schools from Pike County involved? Another major issue in the Fishtrap Lake area are several abandoned unground coal-fires. These fires have been ignored for decades with little to no efforts to extinguish them. Most people don’t even know these fires exist.
