Headwaters is currently seeking resumes for an AmeriCorps VISTA position in Whitesburg, Kentucky, to assist with improving water quality in eastern Kentucky. This is a one-year, renewable position that will begin in February 2014.
Headwaters is a nonprofit, grassroots organization whose mission is to improve streams in Letcher County by organizing stream clean-ups and instilling a sense of responsibility for water resources through environmental education.
Duties for the VISTA position will include:
- Researching and implementing methods for improving stream quality
- Raising funds through donations and grants to help fund Headwaters events and programs
- Organizing volunteers for stream clean-ups, water testing workshops, reforestation events, and other opportunities
- Serving as an informational outlet for water quality issues in the county and region. This includes maintaining Headwaters’ online presence, as well as relaying information to local media.
This position will be a part of the Appalachian Coal Country Team, an Office of Surface Mining/AmeriCorps VISTA initiative. Applicants must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Experience or interest with water-quality and community-development issues is preferred.
This full-time, AmeriCorps VISTA position provides a monthly living stipend of roughly $850, health insurance, child care (if eligible), student loan forbearance (with interest paid), relocation expenses, and the choice of a $5,550 education award or $1,500 cash stipend upon term completion.

The only age requirement is that the VISTA must be 18. You can’t be too old!
